PINEWOOD DERBIES March 2005 This year, scouts have an opportunity to participate in up to 3 different Pinewood Derbies. What's a Pinewood Derby you might ask? It’s a fun activity where scouts construct (with a little help from parents sometimes) a small wooden racer which they can then race against other scouts using a specially constructed track. Currently the dates for the Pinewood Derbies are as follows: Pack 452 Pinewood Derby Sunday, February 4, 2007 1:30-3:30 pm Silver Spring Jewish Center, Silver Spring, MD Open to all scouts and siblings in Pack 452. If you haven't completed your pinewood derby racer, there's still time to get it done! Registration takes place from 1:30-2:00 pm and racing will begin promptly at 2:00 pm. This is one of our most exciting events of the year so I hope everyone will make a special effort to attend. Scoutmaster Jim Canik will again be our Master of Ceremonies. At this event the scouts bring their wooden pinewood racer cars that they have constructed on their own or with their parents and race them on a wooden track. It is very exciting as the boys cheer for themselves and each other. In addition to the scouts, siblings and also parents can participate. All participants, as well as the winners will receive awards. Kits for making the cars are available for $5 through the pack. Please contact Carin Gottlieb at 301-681-5840 to arrange a time to pick them up at her home. The official kits, as well as pre-cut cars can also be purchased at the Scout Shop in Bethesda (corner of 355 and Cedar Lane) or the Surplus Plus store in Wheaton (corner of Veirs Mill Rd and Ennalls Ave). Local craft stores such as Michael's or A.C. Moore also have kits, but be careful to make sure you purchase an "official" pinewood derby car as many of the kits have wheels that are not "qualified." Cars must meet strict size and weight limits. For details, go to www.pack452.com/PackDocs/Pinewood_Derby_Rules.PDF. Trophies will be awarded to the three top winners. In addition, awards will be given to the fastest cars in each den. Den winners are also eligible to compete in the District Pinewood Derby (see below). Cars can also compete in a separate competition based on their appearance. The show car categories include: Best Blue and Gold Best American Best Israeli Coolest Car Funniest Car Most Original Most Artistic Most Colorful Refreshments will be served. The specific rules and guidelines for our pinewood derby can be directly downloaded from www.pack452.com/packdocs/pinewood_derby_rules.pdf. The rules are very specific, so READ THEM CAREFULLY. Siblings are welcome to participate. Pinewood Derby Kits can be purchased for $5/kit from your Den Leader. Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 winners. |
